Fineline tattoos
Fineline describes a style and application method for a tattoo that’s administered with a very small needle grouping, partially diluted ink, and a delicate hand. The overall look of a Fineline tattoo is soft, dainty, and feminine. Botanicals/greenery, patterns, ornamentals, small portraits, and text, are just some of the popular subject matter for Fineline.
Our skin is a living, ever changing organ. As ink is deposited and settles into our skin, our tattoos change in appearance. Ink stays a liquid in our skin, and our body tirelessly tries to decide what stays and what gets carried away by our white blood cells. Our skin also regularly creates and sheds cells, which naturally will impact the surface appearance of our skin based art.
In the average tattoo that is administered with full saturation ink and larger needle groupings, pigment begins to migrate slowly over time, which makes our tattoos gradually look bolder.
For Fineline, the ultimate goal is that their longterm look remains light, soft, and legible. Fineline tattoos, if done correctly, will always become more light before blowing out/being very dark. Sometimes they can heal too light or inconsistently, which will require an initial touchup to achieve their desired appearance.
Many factors contribute to the initial healing and longevity of a tattoo. Knowledgeable execution and great aftercare directly impact how a tattoo can look in the short and long term.
Fineline Tattoos in particular are susceptible to fading and require mindful care and potentially regular touchups to maintain their appearance.
Ways to care for your Fineline Tattoo:
Keep clean, dry, and very lightly moisturized with a neutral balm or lotion
Avoid moisturizing with petroleum based products, such as Aquaphor or Vaseline
Avoid heavy sun exposure. Our tattoos, regardless of style, will always age better with minimal sun exposure- this is particularly true for Fineline.
Use sunscreen when out in the sun
Carefully follow aftercare instructions provided by artist
Reach out 3-4 weeks after the tattoo is done for a touchup if it needs it.
